Vincenzo Montella - L'Aeroplanino Returns To Rome

Last night Roma returned to winning ways in Italy’s Serie A after beating Bologna 1-0, and picking up their first victory in five league games. The win allowed the Giallorossi to subsequently move up back into the converted European places in the league table.

The reason this win was important is because it signifies the first steps on the road to recovery after former Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri quit his post at the Stadio Olimpico after a poor 4-3 defeat to Genoa last weekend, in which Roma were 3-0 up and went on to be defeated.

After this defeat, the 59-year old Italian offered his resignation, and after a day’s consideration, it was duly accepted by the Roma board. The sacking (or resignation) may not have come to a surprise to some, as Ranieri has been sacked from four of his last five managerial jobs.

This season Roma fans had been protesting and expressing their disappointment at the inconsistency shown in comparison to last year where they fought Inter Milan for the Serie A title, taking it to the wire.

Roma have lost 8 of the 26 games they have already played this season compared to the 6 games they last overall last season. This slump, plus rumours of a fall-out with senior squad members, all added to Ranieri’s exit. He left the side lumbered in 8th place.

The man who has taken over the reins in the Italian capital has surprised many, but is seen as a man who knows the club better than anyone else, and despite his non-existent managerial experience, was appointed until the end of the season. This man is former striker; Vincenzo Montella.

Montella, aged just 36-years old, has already been very vocal in expressing his desire to improve this current team, highlighting the issues with the current team being more psychological rather than tactical.

During his professional playing career, he a spent the majority and a total of 10 years in Italy’s capital, racking up 194 Serie A appearances and scoring 83 times. He was a small, clinical striker, with great technique and finishing ability, and was affectionately nicknamed L'Aeroplanino (the little Aeroplane) by the fans. In 1999 he cost Roma €25million when signing from Sampdoria.

Now he is in charge at Roma, in a role which can only be labelled as a “Caretaker manager”, he said he is no “stop-gap” and isn’t concentrating on whether he has a future as boss, or who should be taking charge at Roma, but he is approaching the role as a man who loves the club, and as a man who has a job to do, stating it a role his taking on with “enthusiasm and confidence”.

Montella has already publically rallied the troops stating that the players “need to free themselves from this burden (media pressure) and this is the first step we need to take so that they can play at their true potential”.

He also received acknowledgement from Roma vice-captain Daniele De Rossi, who gave a ringing endorsement of Montella as a player, describing him as having “great character, enthusiasm, determination and clear ideas” with these attributes De Rossi expects Montella to bring as a manager.

As stated earlier, he led them to a vital 1-0 victory last night over Bologna, and his impact could already be seen in the performance. Roma, who had conceded 11 goals in their last 3 Serie A matches, kept their first clean sheet for 4 games, and were credited by opposition manager Alberto Malesani for their strong defensive performance.

Montella also made strong changes to the starting line-up, as expected dropping goalkeeper Julio Sergio and centre back Juan for Alex Doni and Philipe Mexes respectively. The biggest name absent from the starting XI was Roma legend and club captain Francesco Totti who was left on the bench. Ironically Totti had had a falling out with previous coach Claudio Ranieri over that very issue.

Vincenzo Montella now has to build on this good start, continue to pick the right starting eleven and not be influenced by the big names or by former friends. It’s a big task, but with the quality and depth of players available at the club, the great fan base and now a fan’s favourite in charge, the aim of reaching those desired Champions League places is short term, yet achievable objective for Giallorossi.

A look around Europe

In January last year we took a quick glance around, to find out who was in the running for league titles, and who were the players who had been stealing the limelight and putting in the class performances.

England - Premiership

The Premiership has been as exciting as ever, but with the gulf in class between the teams becoming shorter, no teams are dominating, or is any team serious putting any daylight between the top spot and the chasing pack. It really has become a case of “anyone can beat anyone”.

Who’s in the title hunt?

Manchester United sits atop of the Premier League, with rivals Man City and Arsenal collectively just 4 points apart. Tottenham, Chelsea and Sunderland are in the chasing pack, mainly in the hunt for Champions League places.

Chelsea has been in shocking form this season, but a team who has such a strong first 11 cannot be discounted. They may not be in the hunt right now, but they could definitely make a late charge, if they kick on from January.

Relegation candidates

From 20th to 12th place in the league, the nine teams are only separated by 5 points. West Ham currently sit bottom, while Wigan, Aston Villa, Wolves, West Brom, Birmingham, Fulham, Liverpool and Everton are all possibilities for relegation. Some have more quality then others, but let’s clear: No one is too big to go down.

Star performers

Samir Nasri – the 23 year old has been sensational this season for the Gunners. He has carried the creative and goal scoring mantle since Cesc Fabregas has had injury problems, and picked up 13 goals in 26 appearances this season.

Gareth Bale – The Welshman has been performing really well and constantly over the past 12 months, and has shown at the highest level that he can be one of the World’s be left midfielders. He is just 21 years old, and needs to continue this form and progression.

Spain - La Liga

Who’s in the title hunt?

La Liga has been interesting this season. Yes Barca and Real are the only two teams battling for the title, but some of the football they have been playing has been sensational. Barcelona is dismantling teams, breaking records left, right and centre, while Lionel Messi, Xavi and Iniesta still continue to shine. Real Madrid on the other hand, is still clinging on to the Barca coat-tails.

Villarrael are playing some sensational football, but unfortunately, they are 13 points behind the league leaders. Not that they have been performing poor, it’s just that Barca and Real are that dominant. So it seems its now only between Villarrael, Valencia and Espanyol for the final two Champions League spots.

Relegation candidates

Real Zaragoza use to have a batch of some of the best football talent in Europe, think players such as Diego and Gabriel Miltio, Ricardo Oliviera, Roberto Ayala and Pablo Aimar but still managed to underachieve unbelievably and get relegated two seasons ago. With promotion last year, the now sees themselves in the current bottom three with fellow promoted side Sporting Gijon as well as Almeria. Levante, Malaga and Osasuna are the other side’s who could slip through the trap door.

Star performers

Lionel Messi – Aren’t you guys sick of hearing me speak about this guy? The Best player in the World continues to progress, and smash teams into the ground, scaring the life out of defenders and goalkeepers. His stats this season? Played 15, scored 18 with 12 assists. Not much more to say.

Cristiano Ronaldo – the World’s two best players, are going head to head once again this season, with Ronaldo more than capable of holding his own. The £80million man has been worth every single penny, and this season, whether it is left foot, right foot, with his head or from a set piece, CR7 hits the back of the net. His stats this season? Player 18, score 22 with 6 assists. Not much more to add!

Italy - Serie A

Who’s in the title hunt?

The Italian top flight redeemed some excitement with AS Roma pushing Inter Milan all the way to the wire last season. This season, Inter have struggled terribly (similar to Chelsea) and failed to mount any sort of challenge (injuries didn’t do a lot to help the cause). However they have sacked Rafa Benitez, hired Leanardo, but cannot be consider title contenders as they sit in 7th place, 11 points behind the league leaders.

AC Milan sit 4 points clear at the top, while Napoli, Lazio and Roma make up the chasing pack. Cavani has been a revelation at Napoli, Zarate continues to be spectacular for Lazio and Borriello has been a great signing for Roma. These players are leading the charge for their respective club.

Palermo and Juventus are the other real contenders, but will probably be more focused on Champions League qualification.

Relegation candidates

Bari, Brescia and Lecce currently occupy the bottom three spots, however similarly to the Premiership, the teams from 10th place onwards to the relegation zone, are only separated by 5 points.

Big names such as Parma, Genoa and Fiorentina all find themselves in the bottom half of the table, amongst these 10 teams.

Star performers

Zlatan Ibrahimovic – He had a season away from Serie A, although he was panned by critics, he still collected four trophies during his time at the Camp Nou, and returned to Italy where he is in his comfort zone. He has regained the form which saw him receive the plaudits while playing at Inter Milan, and with his performances this season, he is returning to his status as one of the best strikers in the world. He has played 17 games, scoring 10 goals, with 8 assists.

Edinson Cavani – This is one of my favourite players in Serie A, and he has taken the mantle as one of the most promising strikers in the World. The 24 year old has been instrumental in Napoli’s challenge for the title this year, scoring 13 goals in 19 games, with 3 assists. The Uruguayan is on loan from Palermo, but its evident Napoli will do all they can in order to keep the striker at the end of the season.

Germany - Bundesliga

Who’s in the title hunt?

The Bundesliga has been a story of two teams this season. Defending champions Bayern Munich have been horrible (a trend with all the top teams domestically around Europe) and they now sit a massive 14 points behind the league leaders, the league leaders being Borussia Dortmund. Yes the Yellow and Black side that were so impressive in the 90’s are finally back at the top where they belong. They have had a brilliant season so far with the defensive combination of Neven Subotic, Mats Hummels and Marcel Schmelzer the cornerstone helping the team only concede 10 goals in 17 games.

Dortmund sit 10 points clear of nearest challengers Mainz and Bayern Leverkusen, so it’s pretty much there title to lose.

Relegation candidates

Monchengladbach is struggling at the bottom of the league, while more surprisingly Stuttgart sit just two points above them, and in serious danger of relegation. Koln, St. Pauli, Werder Bremen and Wolfsburg (minus Eden Dzeko) make up the other relegation candidates.

Star performers

Borussia Dortmund – They are run away league leaders, with a host of players playing above expectations and surpassing their expectation. The defensive three I mentioned earlier have been superb, Nuri Sahin and Mario Gotze in midfield as well as forwards Lucas Barrios and Shinji Kagawa.

France - Ligue 1

Who’s in the title hunt?

Another tightly contested league, with no one team clearly dominating, with the top 6 only just separated by 3 points. Lille currently sit top, with PSG, Rennes, Lyon, Marseille and Saint-Etienne making up the chasing pack.

Relegation candidates

Promoted side Arles-Avignon are 11 points adrift, and seem already gone, while fellow promoted side Caen along with RC Lens make up the other teams in the relegation zone. AS Monaco and Valenciennes are the other two teams hovering just about the drop zone.

Star performers

Steve Mandana – the Olympique Marseille goalkeeper, and club captain, is vastly fulfilling his potential, and at 25 years old, having a great season in Ligue 1. He has kept 7 clean sheets this season, and his side have the third best defensive record in Ligue 1.

Nene – the Brazilian has been an inspired signing for Paris Saint-Germain since joining from AS Monaco. He has been top class in the clubs Europa League campaign, and domestically he has hit 13 goals in 18 appearances.

Moussa Sow – the 24 year old Senegalese striker has finally begun to show his ability, and reach the potential he was touted as possessing while playing at Rennes. Now with league leaders Lille, he has scored 14 times in 18 league games.

Netherlands - Eredivsie

Who’s in the title hunt?

Defending champions FC Twente are still in the title hunt, but sit second behind free scoring PSV. The league leaders have blitzed 53 goals in 19 games, and only conceding 19 goals. FC Groningen and AFC Ajax are the only other teams really in with a shout at the title.

Relegation candidates

Willem II has only 4 points, from 19 games and is cast iron candidates. VVV-Venlo is 8 points away from safety, and seems likely to join the Willem II in the Eereste Divisie, while Excelsior, Excelsior and Vitesse are the others who could slip into danger.

Star performers

Ola Toivonen – the 24 year old Swedish striker was linked with a move to Liverpool in the summer, but the deal never surfaced. He has notched up 11 goals this season.

Balazs Dzsudzsak – another PSV player who has been on fire this season, and has been instrumental in PSV’s return to the top, chipping in with 10 goals.

Björn Vleminckx – the Belgian forward is at the top Dutch scoring charts, and he plays for mid table side N.E.C. He has contributed 13 of his side’s 31 goals scored this season.

So that’s Real Talk Football’s half season look around Europe, let us know what you think about all the teams underperforming in their domestic leagues, as well as some of the stand out individuals.

A Look Around Europe

As we enter the final third of the football season, its clear that there are many teams still in the hunt for their respective domestic league honours. Players will be willing to give there all in order to attain a spot on the plane to South Africa.

This post is a look at the title races going on in and around Europe, and the key players involved.

The Premiership
First up is the English Premier League, whereby as things stand right now, its a three horse race for the title, between Arsenal, Chelsea and reigning champions Manchester United. Only four points separate the top 3 and competition is fierce. With Chelsea's exit from the Champions League, they have less games to concentrate on, however they still have the prospect of a double this season. With 7 games remaining, all managers believe it will go down to the wire, and I wholeheartedly agree.

Manchester United - Current Position: 1st - Key Man: Wayne Rooney
Sir Alex Ferguson's side have to still face Chelsea, Tottenham and rivals Manchester City in the run in, but with one of the deadliest strikers in the World at the moment; Wayne Rooney, he could lead the Red Devils to a record 19th League title. All eyes will be on the Englishman.

Arsenal - Current Position: 2nd - Key Man: Cesc Fabregas
The team from North London were written off at the start off the season, mainly due the sales of Emmanuel Adebayor and Kolo Toure, however boss Arsene Wenger has instilled belief and courage throughout the side, which gives them as good an opportunity as any other to pick up some silverware. All eyes will be on star midfielder, and club captain, Cesc Fabregas who has 18 goals in 33 games with 15 assists.

Carlo Ancelotti's side have struggled in March however they are still very much in the race for the title, with a game in hand, as well as no more tough Champions League matches, that may be a blessing in disguise. Striker Didier Drogba is definately one of the most feared strikers and can drag the blues to the title, with the help of the in form Florent Malouda, the underrated John Mikel Obi and the ever dependent Frank Lampard.

Who do you think will win the title?

La Liga
Next up is La Liga, where the Spanish teams have spent a lot of money this season, no more so than Real Madrid, who forked out a whopping €250million. Its a two horse race at the top, with superclubs Barcelona and Real Madrid joint at the top, leading 3rd place Valencia by 18 points. Only 11 games to go, all eyes on 11th April for "El Classico" at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Real Madrid - Current Position: 1st - Key Man: Gonzalo Higuain
Suprised I didn't say Cristiano Ronaldo? Well check out the Higiuan post and you'll understand why! Don't get me wrong CR9 will be a vital factor, but Higuain has been on fire this season. Real, out of the Champions League, have the advantage with just 11 remaining league fixtures for them to solely concentrate on. The importance of Sergio Ramos, the playmaking skills of Xabi Alonso and the magic of Ronaldo have sured up Real's title chances.

FC Barcelona - Current Position: 2nd - Key Man: Lionel Messi
Barcelona have just as good a chance to win the La Liga crown, and retain the Champions League, however they face a tricky task of facing English side Arsenal, and must go to Real Madrid's stomping ground and come away victorious. Striker Zlatan Ibrahomovic has been rather hit and miss this season, but scored a few important goals, along with the young winger Pedro chiping in with 7, Thierry Henry with 3, but the main man and undoubted superstar is Argentine forward Messi. Back to back hat tricks in the League against Valencia and Real Zaragoza, plus 2 against Stuttgart in the Champions League, has led to Barca President, Joan Laporta calling him "the best player in history". Can he take Barca to the double?

Who do you think will win the title?

Serie A
One of the most boring leagues in Europe? Overrated? Tactical and defensive? Some of the many statements used to describe the Serie A in the last few season, however thanks to a resurgance at AC Milan and with Claudio Ranieri's Roma, player contract disputes, the terrible form of Diego and Juventus, plus the added relegation fears of SS Lazio all have mixed up the league and made it very very interesting. Oh yeah, lets not forget about that "bloke" Mourinho... After blowing a 7 point league, Inter are only top of the league by one point, from AC Milan and 4 points from AS Roma, with 8 games to go.

Inter Milan - Current Position: 1st - Key Man: Wesley Sneijder
The man who pulled the strings against Chelsea and cause them all sorts of problems, is fastly becoming the key man at the Inter side of the San Siro, along with striker Diego Milito. However in the past month it seems Mourinho's side focus on the Champions League has led them to drop valuable points and lose their grip on the Scudetto. Mourinho's side need to fix up and not look to the Champions League Quarter-Final against CSKA and concentrate on getting Eto'o, Stankovic and Pandev to maintain their domestic dominance.

AC Milan - Current Position: 2nd - Key Man: Ronaldinho
After a really poor start to thier Serie A challenge, Ronaldinho and co are mounting a serious offensive for the title, however they have been a big blow losing both David Beckham and Alessandro Nesta to injury. But with the returning Alexandre Pato, maybe AC could actually knock Inter off of thier throne.

AS Roma - Current Position: 3rd - Key Man: Luca Toni
What is there to say about the "tinkerman" Claudio Ranieri? He was ousted from Chelsea and kicked out of Juventus and now he has manage a mini miracle at Roma. He has led to the Romans being just 4 points from Inter and at the very least a certainty to achieve a Champions League spot, and a return, next season. January signing Luca Toni has scored 4 goals in 7 matches although he has struggled to settle in thanks to a knee injury, but he is finding his feet back in Italian football. With goalie Julio Sergio performing well, John Arne Riise finding a new found love for football and Talisman Francesco Totti, they could be the dark horses.

There the "Big Leagues" but here is quick insite to the other leagues around Europe. In Holland: with 6 games remaining, former England Manger Steve McClaren's FC Twente lead former Champions League winners AFC Ajax by 4 points, with PSV 1 point behind them and the McClaren's side are in pole position to win the Eredivisie after finishing second last season.

In France, its clear that this lead is without doubt the most exciting in Europe, with as many a six teams battling it out for the Ligue 1 title. With 10 games left, Girondins de Bordeaux and suprise package Montpellier are joint top with 56 points, Auxerre are 1 point behing with 55, Marsielle have 53, while Lille and Lyon sit 5th and 6th respectively with 51 points. Expect a very exciting finish to the season, with the added spice of Lyon facing Boredeaux in the Champions League Semi-Final aswell. All to play for...

Thats my comprehensive round up of the Big Five leagues in Europe and a look at the Key Men involved. For more search Real Talk Football in google and get the Twitter or Facebook Page.

Mario Balotelli A Future Star?? Here's all you need to know

Name: Mario Barwuah Balotelli
Date of Birth: 12/08/1990
Age: 19
Height: 6ft 2in
Nationality: Italian Ghanaian
Position: Striker
Previous Club: Lumazzene
Club: FC Inter Milan
Apps: 44 Goals: 15
Shirt Number: 45

Mario Balotelli was born in Palermo in Italy, in 1990. His story is a complicated one as he is born of Ghanaian parents, but see's himself as a full blooded Italian, and pride's himself on one day playing for the Azzurri (Italian national team). Balotelli is already fully capped at Italian under 21 level, with 15 Appearances and 6 Goals.

Mario is a technically gifted player with great pace and is an excellent set piece taking. He has excellent awareness in and around the box, and rose to recognition by scoring two goals against Juventus in the Coppa Italia quarter-final. This talent has been recognized by Inter manager Jose Mourinho, who has already handed him 33 appearances, scoring 12 goals, in just a season and a half. He has already played up front with players such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Luis Figo and Julio Cruz, while currently partnering the likes of Samuel Eto'o, Diego Milito and David Suazo.

The downside to the 19 year is his temperament, which has consistently got himself into disciplinary problems, for club and country as well as referees and Jose Mourinho himself.

The youngsters temperament may have been induced by a degree of Racism he has suffered while playing in Italy, from supposed football fans. In any case these hollow "fans" are just idiots, and will struggle to curb the processes of the wonderkid. Sports giants Nike having already taken a shine to the youngster,
become an official sponsor.

Despite the racism Mario Bolatelli continues to prides himself on being Italian with respect to being born by Ghanaian parents, and despite many calls from Ghanaian fans for him to play for the Black Stars, he has expressed his desire to play for the Azzurri on numerous occasions’. All I can say is once he graces the International stage, for either nation, with an improvement in his behaviour and attitude, he will be a world star, watch this space.
